I will be the first to admit I HATE underwear with a c-ring, pouch strap or any type of other enhancing technology other then a great pouch. With that said I actually selected the N2N Bodywear Titan Sport as a pair I wanted to review. The hopes were high that they would live up to the N2N name for comfort and not let me down and wishing I had chosen another pair.

I wore this pair as underwear rather then a pair of swim. This pair can easily be considered either. I received a size large in white. The Titan is also available in black. The size large fit my 36 waist very easily. N2N is pretty good with having consistent sizing.

The first thing you have to do is put this pair on. It’s not very complicated. You slide on the brief, put your junk through the hole and then bring the pouch up and snap it with three snaps at the top. I was really worried that the snaps would be hard to snap but I didn’t have any issues. My next concern was the bottom of the pouch seemed like it wasn’t holding me in, so I went to work with another pair of underwear just in case I had a wardrobe malfunction.

As the say went on I had very few issues with the pair. It fit really well but not too tight. Take note that you slide everything through the hole and make sure it’s all the way at the base or it will drive you crazy.  I did this and after I adjusted it really fit very well. It honestly really surprised me how well it fit and how much I liked it. At work it was a moderately active day. As the day progressed my fear of a wardrobe malfunction was just that, a fear, because they held me all in place. The snaps came off and stayed in place when needed . There would be nothing worse then having a snap come off midday.

As I mentioned above the sizing is based on US standard sizes. This means the large fit my 36 waist size pretty well.  I have rarely heard sizing issues with N2N. So if you match up your size on their chart you will be fine.

I really liked how the pair fit through out the day. It really fit well and I wouldn’t wear if you don’t want to show off what you have. The pouch pushes up and out everything so you won’t leave much to the imagination. The enhancement maybe a problem if you wear this pair to work. However if you wear it as a swimwear this maybe a bonus for you.  Another great thing is the construction. N2N paid attention to how it would fit a guy and made it so it doesn’t bind or become uncomfortable after extended periods. This leads to the cons, the only one is I would have liked a bigger pouch.

I do plan to wear this as swimwear. There is a pool near me where this pair won’t be shunned but rather encouraged. I will let you know how it goes. I was going to include that on this review but I haven’t been able to get to the pool. Stay tuned for a follow up.

The most recent pair I received for review was the PPÜ 1310 Brief, which is described as their “Men’s Low Rise Classic Brief with Contrasting Waistband and Trim.” It comes in three color options to the masses, but the review pair I received were the royal blue briefs with white trim. Upon hearing which brief I would be reviewing and getting them in my hands for the first time I was excited about trying them. I have recently dropped a bunch of weight and really have been fitting well into all of my smaller undies so I didn’t think I’d have any issues. My first impressions were that this is a traditional brief in terms of cut and design but the fact that it is 82.5% Nylon and 17.5% spandex gives it a modern look and feel.

I’ve only gotten one other pair of PPÜ undies before, from a fan who sent me their crazy jockstrap/brief which they call a “Modern Brief” and it fit fairly well, so I was a bit disappointed when I slipped these on. It wasn’t that the waist on these XLs (34-36) was too tight, but I think the problem stemmed from the brief’s construction. The rather large amount of spandex in this brief really provides an overall constrictive fit, and with my body shape, that’s not always the best marriage. I am athletically built and have always had quite the butt on me, and with all underwear, the roundness of my backside puts all of my underwear to the test, and these briefs couldn’t really handle my bubble butt like I was hoping they would. The stretch my butt was producing naturally pulled the already small pouch closer to my body, so I felt really cramped up front and since I am fairly well-endowed had to situate myself just right to get a comfortable fit. I only wore them a couple hours before I gave up, but I blame that entirely on the brief and me just not matching up.

Overall the construction is very well done, the brief is mostly nylon which in this brief is fairly breathable making them a good choice for summer wear. All of the contrasting trim-the waistband, the pouch frame and the leg openings feature really strong spandex, which provides a close fit. I think on an average to skinny sized male, these briefs would be an excellent choice to wear this summer. As I said, the pair I reviewed was royal blue with white piping, but the two other color options are summer ready. The first is coral with grey trim, and the other option is a mint blue with royal blue trim, I think both look really good.

These briefs certainly run small in comparison with other offerings from PPÜ and some other brands that are known to run small, so make sure you size up. I wish they had given me a better fit, but as I said if you are a smaller guy, or even someone with a medium build and maybe not packing too much up front, these would be an ideal summer brief. Can you tell us about your new brand?

What made you create a new line of swimwear and underwear?

A: We think we can do underwear and swimwear better and give customers more custom options than other companies.

Can you tell us about your current swim line? What styles and colors are available? Why did you choose those styles?

A: We created the Swim 2013 collection in two ultra comfortable cuts; a boi short and a low-rise swim brief. The collection styling spans solids to vivid prints, as we know that tastes differ, but are sure everyone will love the fit. We currently have three prints and three solids available, and look to potentially expand parts of the collection in the future. We essentially chose these styles because they are what we love to wear and during prototyping we made sure that fit stayed tantamount to our sassy style.

Do you have a philosophy about creating underwear/swimwear?

‘Old habits die hard.’  The same can be said of attitudes or personal beliefs.  Anything that jeopardizes the safe comfort of our small thought bubble universe is usually eradicated quickly.  It’s just human nature.  After all, no one wants to accept that their deep-held personal beliefs may be wrong.

But that’s not what we’re here to talk about… our story is about Speedos!!!

Actually, my introduction is highly relevant to that style of skimpy spandex swimwear.  If you’re unsure about why that is then I offer this challenge: put on a Speedo, go to your nearest public beach or pool, and loiter in the sun.  Count the number of awkward moments you experience in an hour.

The truth is that, despite centuries of human progress and enlightenment, we are still unable to shake our profound feelings of shame toward our own bodies.  This is especially true here in the U.S. where we have John Ashcroft and Super Bowl wardrobe malfunctions to remind us that unclothed human bodies are morally wrong.

It is a perverse dichotomy.  We love seeing skin.  It is all over our magazine covers, television ads, movies, etc.  And yet, we have somehow all silently agreed amongst ourselves to make our disgust known anytime we see it in public.  Recall the scene from the movie Meet the Parents in which Ben Stiller is left no alternative but to don a Speedo in front of the entire family and how the group taunted him.  The knee-jerk ‘eeewwww’ reaction is so embedded in our culture as to be second nature.  It is a learned behavior and it is doing us no favors.

A few years ago my girlfriend (now fiancé) and I made a trip to a resort on the island of St. Lucia.  We were staying at a place that catered mostly to couples (lots of newlyweds).  Our visit happened to coincide with that of a large group of 30 and 40 something couples from the Netherlands.  They were a fun group. Good lord could they drink!

The afternoon of our second day there, we were lying on the sand at the beach behind our bungalow.  It was only then I became aware that I was the only man wearing board shorts.  My male European counterparts were all wearing speedos.  It was actually me, in my family‑friendly swimwear, who was getting the odd looks from people.  Or at least I certainly felt that way.  Go figure.  By the third day I had decided enough was enough.  After some encouragement from my GF (and after downing a brightly colored fruity umbrella drink) I strode to the resort shop, bought a pair of black speedos, and “hammocked up.”

It’s important to note here that I swam competitively for many years and was accustomed to wearing a speedo during workouts at a pool.  But I had never simply worn one while relaxing on a beach.  Nor did I possess the kind of rippled physique that might grant me an exemption from mockery.  No, I was stumbling head-on into Greg Focker territory.

But truthfully I felt no stigma or shame.  I was lucky enough to find myself in a situation where the social pressure element (the fear of being taunted) was totally eliminated.  My girlfriend was not critical at all as she seemed only to encourage me.  Once that critical element was removed the only pressure remaining was internal.

And this brings me to perhaps the most important point.  A straight man wearing a Speedo may experience thoughts of self-doubt which are as inhibiting as any external social pressure.  We are afraid that if we wear a Speedo (and heaven forbid we enjoy it) that it somehow makes us gay.  As if Tim Gunn himself descended from the heavens, waived a bejeweled wand, and made a cloud of pink smoke go “poof” on top of our lives.  Your next stop is an appearance on Oprah where the topic is straight men who ruined the lives of their unsuspecting female partners.

This is not how it works.  Honest.  My experience did not turn me gay.  In fact, it was quite the opposite.  Ignoring the urge to cover up made the personal time with my girlfriend way more adventurous and flirty than it had ever been before.  Lacking a better term I refer to it as the ‘Tarzan Effect.’  I felt less schlubby.  I actually liked my own body for once, even if I was carrying a keg instead six pack abs.  It was this sudden inrush of confidence that made the rest of our stay incredible.

This experience was important to have because it marked a change in my attitude.  It was the last time I really worried about what other people thought of me.  This letting go has had many positive effects in other parts of my life.  The speedo itself is really just a secondary part of the bigger change in thinking that I’m trying to sell here.  And that is: be unafraid.  Find what it is that makes you feel confident or happy.  See how it affects your relationships, intimate or otherwise.  Experiment.  This body you have is the only one you get.  Why not enjoy it?

I don’t expect this sense of adventure or experimentation will be everyone’s cup of tea.  I’m sure that there really are people who, absent any social pressure, still really prefer to cover up.  And that’s fine too.  The only thing I would urge upon those people is to withhold judgement of others who are more adventurous than you.  They’re not trying to gross you out.  And if it does gross you out, just look away.

If you’re still afraid that a speedo will turn you gay just remember that it’s simply an article of clothing.  The inherent traits that you possess are much stronger and are unlikely to change by virtue of a wardrobe choice.  If I’m wrong and it does change you then look on the bright side… you’ll get to meet Oprah.

So for the guys reading who are still on the fence, I dare you… “hammock up”

2Wink has always created really fun underwear. This factor has also been carried over into their swimwear. This month they have released the H20 Range. A low rise bikini that is available in two colors, black and red, with a white pouch.

Some things you need to know about this suit: First is the pouch. The pouch when wet will be extremely see through. So wear it at your own risk. The 2Wink website says the transparency level of the H2O on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 9. If your friends aren’t prepared, you may shock them by leaving nothing to the imagination.

I get the chance to review another great pair from N2N Bodywear. Much like the Signature Trunk, this Seafarer Brief is a style N2N has had in their line up for a few years. Each season they redefine the line and change up the colors. It’s much like revisiting an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. The Seafarer line has three new colors, black, light blue and white with a white waistband and trim. I have reviewed the other briefs before and looked forward to seeing if anything changed.

I received the light blue pair in a size large. The large fit my 36 waist very well. I wore this pair on a weekend that was pretty active with errands. I know you’re shocked it was not another day at the office. Whereas the Signature line I reviewed this week has a definite pouch, this one is the opposite. There is no defined pouch design with this pair. You may think this is a problem but the way the material is made it has extra give that felt great and almost created a pouch. Speaking of material, the previous materials at times to me seems a little too loose. Granted it fit great but I could always hoped for better support. This material (90% cotton/10% Spandex) seems thicker for a lack of better word. It gave me a bit more support than previous editions of the brief. So my active day really gave this pair a test and it passed.

Sizing with N2N is pretty much what you see on the site. The large fits a 36 waist fine. They are pretty much on American sizing. I am 100% confident that you will get the right size. N2N makes underwear guys want to wear. A few years ago they added XL to their size line up and it has expanded their audience.

I really liked the new material best. I’m not sure how to describe it but it just seems thicker. It gave me great support through out my running around town. I was on the go from the morning till afternoon. Next thing I liked was the color. The light blue is one we haven’t seen from N2N that often. This year one of the big trends is lighter colors in underwear. The light blue is a welcome addition to the underwear drawer. The fit was another thing I liked about the pair. Even without a defined pouch it gave me the support I needed through out the day. As for Con’s….I can’t really think of any other then maybe add more colors. Which is a very superficial con and I’m sure next year we’ll see some great colors like last seasons orange.

I really like giving a brand multiple reviews. It shows if they keep up their standards. N2N is definitely keeping up and improving. They always try to out do themselves each year.  My previous pairs have been XL and I’m glad I have one of my favorites back in my underwear drawer. It really sucks to not be able to wear your favorite paris of underwear. But the trade off to be healthier is worth it.

It’s rare I get to try a pair of underwear every year as the line is refreshed. That is what has happened with the N2N Signature Boxer. It was released a few years ago and every time we get review pairs from N2N, I get a chance to revisit this pair. The past reviews have been very good. You wouldn’t think that since I’m not a big boxer brief fan. This is one pair that I have grown to love over the last few years. So, each time it gets refreshed with colors, I get excited to retry it.

The current refresh of the Signature line is either a navy or white body accented by red. It’s a very eye catching color combination.  The trunk has two red accents on the side of the pouch and has a signature 1 ¼” inch waistband. The pair is also designed with a contour pouch, that N2N is known for making. Lastly it’s made in a 90% cotton and 10% spandex blend.

I really didn’t think that N2N could improve on this pair. The last reviews just fit so well that I didn’t see how they could make it better. Imagine my surprise when I put the navy pair on, that the color combinations were not the only improvement. I think they have made the pouch better. It just fit me so well through out the day. It did everything I want a pair to do, give me great support, be true to size and look great. I am not sure how they improved the pouch, but I’m a bigger N2N fan now.

I wore this pair to work and errands later in the day. They held up amazingly well. I have said it before but N2N makes underwear that is made for a guy. I say this because they take time to think about how it will fit and make sure all the needs a guy would have in underwear are met. As I went through the day my mind didn’t even think of the underwear.  The fit was one of those that when you wear a great pair of underwear, you forget you are wearing any. There were no issues in construction or fit. I loved how the pouch not only gave great support but also even enhanced my package.

The sizing on N2N is pretty much spot on. I received a Large, which fit my 36 waist very well.  The rest of the sizing is pretty much American standard sizing. You should have no issues when purchasing a pair of N2N. The previous pairs I reviewed were XL. But with the last year I have lost 75 pounds and have gone down a size! You can see a personal pic below the break. This is one of the few times I have posted a personal pic, so be nice!

There are many pro’s for this pair. The first is the new color combinations. This really accents and shows off what you want to show off! The fabric is perfect for daily wear. The spandex gives you great support and will form to your body. The pouch was another pro. If you love underwear with a great pouch then this should be a must for your underwear drawer! As for con’s the only one I can think of is I admit I like a boxer brief!

In Part One of a two-part series, I’ll be going through some of the factors that makes an underwear lover manage their obsession, how to appreciate the underwear collection you may have amassed over time, and what prompts such action. In Part Two, “In With The New” I will examine some of the factors in the underwear world that contribute in feeding the insatiable desires of a men’s underwear addict and provide some guidelines and tips that have been helpful to me, in managing your obsession with the reality of your finances. 

-Part One- “Love What You Have” 

For the average male, it is probably close to inconceivable to think about owning over 160 pairs of underwear, and for straight men in particular owning that much underwear at one time just seems crazy. But for an underwear addict regardless of orientation, (I happen to be straight) your mind never thinks about the number of pairs you own, because you are constantly thinking about the next purchase. Unless you have an “in” within the underwear industry, you are mostly left paying asking price for your newest, favorite pair. On the rare exception, that is, if you are lucky (and driven) enough like I am, you can score free pairs by writing about and reviewing underwear,  (we are always looking for new talent – so if you like free undies and you like to write – get in touch with us) but for the pairs that you just have to have, you’re left paying full price, or shopping around the internet for sales.

When I got into underwear about 3.5 years ago my collection stood at just three pairs. Today, by my count, my collection is at 160 pairs.  Obviously in those 3.5 years I became an addict, obesssionist, whatever you want to call us underwear loving nerds, and with that comes the honest reality of the money it cost me to get here. Just doing some basic math, the average price for each piece of underwear in my collection is roughly $16, so that honest reality I was talking about shows me that I’ve spent over $2500 in 3.5 years, hundreds of dollars a year.

Of course, if you have a collection that numbers over 20 pairs of designer undies, let alone a collection as big or bigger than mine,  I am preaching to the choir. Men’s designer underwear is expensive and it is expensive for a variety of reasons, which I won’t get into here, but might venture into in a completely separate post later on. I also don’t need to tell you that even as big as that $2500 figure looks on paper (as you read it) you never think about the overall total you’ve spent, you are just thinking about your money in terms of your next purchase.

But life can throw the proverbial curve ball, which can require a shift in priorities when it comes to how you spend your discretionary income, and it did for me this past winter.

My wife was pregnant with our son, and while I knew that his arrival would mean my routine, 2-3 underwear purchases per month would need to take a big hit, I figured I could get by with one, maybe two purchases a month. Then my wife lost her job at 8 months pregnant.  In the four months since our son was born I haven’t made a single underwear purchase. My collection has only been added to by the underwear I get to review for UNB. As tough is this has been for me as an underwear addict, the silver linings to all of it has been quite rewarding.

Since I am no longer having new underwear delivered to my door constantly, I have really been able to enjoy the breadth and depth of the collection I have amassed. If you’re an addict like I am, and constantly growing your collection week in and week out, what you end up doing is neglecting all the great underwear you’ve already got. For instance, before my son was born I had over a hundred pairs of underwear that had been worn less than three times, and a large portion,  less than twice.

No matter how big your underwear stash is, its really imperative that you aren’t wearing certain pairs out, and to do that means you need to “wear through” your collection-meaning, alternate through your collection over the course of as many days as you can. There are so many benefits to doing this too.

For one, in the last couple months of my wife’s pregnancy and especially in the first two or three weeks after he was born, I packed on the pounds. With such a massive underwear collection, some of the pairs from brands that run small-including many of my favorites just wouldn’t fit me any more. The result? I’ve been working out 5 days a week in the morning doing strength/circuit training. I’ve lost a bunch of weight and inches off my waist and I fit into just about everything I own. It’s really been the biggest benefit of loving what I have.

Another huge benefit to enjoying what I have has been the benefit some of my favorite pairs have received. When I gained weight I just wanted to wear all my stretchy Andrew Christian underwear, and cycling the rayon through the wash every week or so is not ideal. Without the threat of new AC briefs to replace them, I’ve forced myself to explore all the other underwear in my collection that performed the same task-and now that I’ve lost weight, the conscious decision to hop around from different labels, styles, and cuts. I could probably go on about my own experiences with why I love taking the break from the thrill of having new pairs to wear each week and instead loving what I have, but it is probably better to make it simple.

Whether you’re like me and you are somewhat forced into the “Loving What You Have” concept, or you simply realize that consistently adding new pairs just creates a ton of barely worn, brand new underwear that languishes in your drawers, there are so many benefits to taking a break from the grind of feeling like you need to buy every designer’s newest offerings. Here are some tips as to why you should do it and the benefits of loving what you have.

• Tip #1 – Make sure you have a succinct method of organization in your drawer – it has been my experience the best way to get the most out of your collection is to organize by style then brand. Better organization leads to seeing your entire collection, and also will help you follow Tip #2.
  
• Tip #2 – Keep your underwear on constant rotation, allowing for only a few exceptions – (for those pairs you know won’t work with the outfit you plan on wearing, or they have an awkward fit, but you feel bad throwing/giving away). If you’ve followed Tip #1 every time you go to put them back in your drawer but the clean pairs on the bottom or the back (depending on how you like to organize your undie drawer) that way the pairs from that brand, in that style will always be those you haven’t worn in a while.
• Tip #3 – Put a bit more thought into your selections on a daily basis – Maybe you are plan on wearing a tight fitting pair of dress pants or jeans, go to the thong or jock pile and give them a chance. Maybe you’re planning on an active day, go for the breathable fabrics in a brief or a trunk that will give you all day comfort. And if all else fails, and you can’t decide which pair to wear (if you’ve made it to this point you’ve succeeded) “dress your mood,” or follow the underwear social media days, like #jockstrapwednesday or #thongthursday. By putting a bit of thought into it each day, you’re guaranteed to remain content.
• Tip #4 – Don’t be afraid to change when you get home from work – A surefire method I’ve used to make sure I’m wearing just about everything in my collection is to put a fresh pair of undies on after getting home from work. No matter your work setting, by the time you get home, no matter how great your underwear is, it just isn’t in the same great shape it was when you slid them on in the morning. Giving a call to the bullpen is a great way to change your mood, and go in an opposite direction of the underwear you just wore out during the day.

For an underwear addict like me (and many of you) of course it must be said that nothing is better than getting those new pairs in the mail or on your doorstep to open and do that initial first try-on. For me, I know I will be back in the game once my family is back on more firm footing–it is killing me not to be able to test out all the new styles from my favorite brands. Yet, with that said there is something noble about wearing what I’ve got. It is all underwear that at one time or another I simply couldn’t live without, and the only way to feel that way about those pairs again is to get them on.

So whether you are like me, and somewhat forced into “Loving What You’ve Got” or you are looking at your credit card statements each month thinking what you could do if you had spent just half of what you spent on underwear, making the decision won’t be easy to swallow at first, but once you realize that your drawer(s) are already filled with the underwear you love, loving what you have becomes so much easier.

This is my second review of Pikante this week. I will say Pikante is becoming one of my favorite underwear companies. The pair I am reviewing is the 9220 Jockbrief.  This isn’t so much of a jockbrief as a jock bikini. It’s a smaller cut then usual jock briefs from other brands. I have one other jock brief and a pair of boxer briefs  from Pikante. The other jock brief has a great fit and I hoped this one was going to have a simlar fit.

The Pikante 9220 Jock brief is available in four colors. Those are white, red, blue and black. Each pair has a contrasting trim around the waist, legs and back openings.  Made out of 94% Cotton, 6% Spandex blend fabric. Which felt good through out the day. The waistband is a smaller waistband that had me worried if it would hold up through out the day.

I wore this pair to work and when I first slid the pair on on it made me feel a bit naughty. I haven’t had too many jock briefs and the opening in the back, didn’t feel odd but felt nice and did I say naughty because everything was hanging out!  The waistband issue I mentioned above didn’t cause problems. It held me up as I ran around work and did some errands. I received the red with black trim. I loved the color combination

Sizing in Pikante is pretty well matched to the sizing chart. I received an XL and it fit my 36-waist fine. This is definitely smaller then typical US sizing but if you follow the chart listed on websites you shouldn’t have a problem getting the right fit.

Some things I liked were the smaller size of the brief. It fit me just right and felt great through out the day. Next, I love the color combination with the trim. They could have made it a solid color but added a bit of pop.  My suggestion for improvement is minor. The Cotton/Spandex blend felt great but I’d love to see this with a nylon/spandex blend. Some other pairs I have with this  blend just fit so well. The nylon/spandex could make it more form fitting.

I have recently started wearing more briefs from Clever Moda, so I was pleased to receive this pair to review.   Clever always creates underwear with interesting patterns and color combinations.  They are usually super comfortable and wear well as everyday underwear.

I wore this pair on a regular work day for me. Eight hours of sitting at a desk staring at a computer monitor.  But unlike most desk-jockeys, I rarely sit still at work.  I get up and walk around, and when it’s slow I’ve been known to bust a move in the middle of the office if there’s good music playing.   I love how these underwear felt all day.  I “dress down” and never had a problem with anything moving out of place.   I wore them to the gym as well after work.  There’s always a little thrill to changing in the locker room when I am wearing new and different underwear.  With it’s squiggly line and diamond mesh pattern, this is definitely an eye-catching pair and drew a few inquisitive looks.   Not only does the mesh make them visually appealing, but also makes them  very breathable.  Throughout the workout, I was comfortable and dry.

The pair I received was a size medium, and fit perfectly on my 31” waist.  The fabric is 85% nylon/15% spandex; stretchy and supportive.  They are available in white or purple, with a silver waistband with the purple Clever logo.  They were form fitting without being uncomfortable, and definitely will go into the rotation to be worn regularly.

D.Hedral is a brand we have covered many times on the blog. Including some really great pictures of former rugger Thom Evans. We got two great pairs to review, which are the Angel Fit and Seamless briefs. The first one I will be reviewing is the Seamless Brief. If you’re not familiar with D.Hedral they are a brand that is developed to enhance your backside.

I was really excited to try the D.Hedral after reporting on them for so long.  I wanted to see how well they accented my assets. The seamless brief, I don’t think has the same powers to show off my backside as the Angel Fit line. In the Angel fit you choose your waist and angle sizes. Where as, the seamless your only choice is size.. My past experiences with seamless underwear have not been too pleasant. Sometimes the waistbands won’t hold up and the pair looses shape during the day.  So I had hopes that I would not be let down.

I wish I had some exciting place to tell you I wore this pair and then put it through its paces. Like I went hiking or played baseball. I did not; I just wore them to work. Which when you come to think about it is where we wear our undies the most. It wasn’t to stressful day. I noted my concerns above and through out the day I kept notice on the underwear. It held up great and the waistband didn’t stretch or loose shape.  Made out of 92% Polyamide, 8% Elastane that felt great against my skin.  It really surprised me that it felt as good at the end of the day as the beginning of the day. I received the black pair but it’s also available in navy, grey and white.

If you order these directly from D.Hedral the sizes are in centimeters. So you will need to either do some math or find a converter calculator (which is what I did). The two sizes are S/M and L/XL.  S/M is 77-90 cm (30 – 35 inches) and L/XL is 91-107  (35-42). I have a 36-inch waist and the l/xl fit me fine. I didn’t want to chance the smaller size.

I really liked the fit of these. They did a great job making a seamless pair. Also, another thing was the waistband. Many times when you get a seamless pair it’s just the main material that is made into a waistband. This pair they paid attention to the waistband to differentiate it from the rest of the body of the brief.  My only complaint is that I wished they had a few brighter colors. I’d love to see a red or orange in this line.

We all agree that underwear should be fun. I decided to put that statement to a test. When I got a chance to pick some Pikante I chose the metallic silver Spotlight Anatoimc brief. It is not one that I would normally wear on a daily basis but sometimes we have to step outside the underwear comfort zone and try something new. This is the third pair of Pikante I have tried since loosing my weight.

My first impression was it’s a really cool pair, being all bright and shiny. The material is metallic (Polyester 93%, Spandex 7%.) but didn’t seem like it would stretch like other pairs I have received from Pikante. I was a little worried about the fit. On top of that is it has a zipper in the pouch. Need I go into detail how that can be bad for a guy? I don’t think so.  But I always try to have an open mind and I took an extra pair of undies to work just in case this pair didn’t work out.

I wore this pair to work. I didn’t want to do a review that was too intensive because I wasn’t sure how well this pair would hold up. The main concerns were it’s ability to move and breathe. So in the morning I put it on and liked the look of it. The fit surprised me; it didn’t fit as tight as I thought it would. It was snug but not too tight. As I wore it through the day my worries about it not breathing were put to rest. I could barely tell I was wearing a metallic pair. Granted I wouldn’t wear it to the gym or running but for daily wear or a date night you should be fine.

The zipper maybe a concern to most of you guys. I didn’t find it as a bother. The zipper is covered with fabric so it didn’t rub me in the wrong places. You may ask if I used it. For the review I unzipped it a few times during the day. Each time I as super careful zipping up. It worked fine and its not just decorative.

If you are familiar with Pikante and their sizing chart it’s pretty much spot on. I’m a size 36 waist and the XL fit me fine. I believe the XL fits 36-38. If you’re close to a 38 you may have an issue. These aren’t made for bigger guys. Being a former bigger guy it can be frustrating to find great undies in larger sizes. But follow the size guide and you should be fine.

I really liked this pair. Will I wear it weekly, probably not but it will definitely be a fun pair to wear on occasion. The major down fall for this pair is it’s hand watch only. If you wash it in the washer you may find the metallic fabric may not hold up. So put in the washer at your own risk. I would say another great place to wear this would be in a costume if you go to Cons. There could be some super creative things you can do with it. But for my daily wear it made me feel sexy all day, no one knew that I was wearing such a fun pair under my pants.

We made the Malebasics Chevron Pattern very irregular on purpose. The idea was to recreate the hand-traced patterns that can be found in African and Amazonian tribes. The effect is extremely beautiful and elegant when printed on our super soft fabric.

“The Prince of Wales”: The quintessential masculine pattern. Commonly known as the Houndtsooth, it has its origins on the garments used by Scottish shepherds. Then popularized by Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor and Prince of Wales, it was adopted by upper classes as a symbol of status. During the 20th Century, designers like Christian Dior, Moschino and Chanel have used the pattern in their collections. As the geometrics are coming back this season, what pattern could be best revived if not the Houndstooth? We decided to go ahead with a Classic as we felt that it was time for the Prince to make it all the way to your underpants but this time, oversized!

The high percentage of Cotton on this collection and its weight, makes it very resistant and soft to the touch. We took our engineered underwear and transformed it by suing these new prints. The comfort is the same it’s just the look that has changed. There is a new element in this collection and that is the fact that we started to use our new logo on the waistband. Also, this is our first collection of Underwear that includes a Jockstrap.

The pair of underwear I am reviewing is the PPU Boxer #1322.  Before trying these on, I enjoyed taking in the big picture.  The white fabric has see through polka dots, the waistband is red with contrasting black logo sewn in, the leg openings have black piping to contrast with the stark white and bright red, and there is a black mesh area above the pouch for a peek-a-boo effect.  Interesting.  The PPU logo sits on each side and is not centered over the pouch which does not bother me like it bothers other guys.  The red waistband has a metallic sheen to it which I really enjoyed.

After trying them on, the waistband is comfortable at nearly two inches in width.  The slight pouch was accommodating, conforming, and defining.  While this is a boxer, it felt more like a brief.  Companies seem to have their own take on what defines a boxer and in this case I suppose a slightly longer side panel is the key.  The boxer was pieced together in multiple pieces to create the pouch and had a seam down the center of the rear for even more definition of the assets.  The black mesh panel shows off the area above the bits and the upper portion of the bits, as well.  It is quite erotic, in my opinion.  This boxer comes in several colors (mint, white, black) that most anyone would enjoy.  This is my second pair of PPU underwear and I like them.

While wearing this pair of underwear, I went on an extended shopping experience over an eight hour period with lots of walking, bending, and trying on clothes.  It was a busy day filled with quite a bit of activity that tested the underwear under normal circumstances for most guys.  The pair fit well, looked good, did not bunch up, did not ride up, and felt like I did not have underwear on at all.  This pair of underwear would be good for a night out on the town or everyday wear, but not for exercising or major activity.

I received a size extra large in this boxer.  This size should cover a 34-36 pant size.  Sizing was not true to size as I am a large in the vast majority of underwear, but this is a non-issue as the company tells you that the XL is a 34-36” size.  So, size up.  This pair can be found for around 21$ on most websites.

I loved the polka dot see through pattern that made up the body of the underwear, the metallic red waistband, the black contrasting piping around the legs, the black mesh see through peek-a-boo panel, and the way the crotch area felt against my skin.  82.5% Nylon and 17.5% Spandex fabric combination makes this a slightly stretchy and conforming pair of underwear that I enjoyed.  The rear seam was another part of the boxer that I enjoyed as it showed off the assets.  This boxer had nothing about it that I could complain about.

Overall, this was a nice pair of underwear and I felt sexy and comfortable at the same time while wearing them.  The design is conforming to the body and creates a fantastic profile from the front and the rear.  I did find that one could take the pouch and pull it down and under the package to push up the mesh pouch area and create a totally different look for the boxer.  I enjoyed this boxer and look forward to wearing it again.

Today’s Underwear of the Week is the 2EROS Black Label Trunk. The Black Label line is very classic in it’s styling. As mentioned above you won’t find bright colors. But don’t let that fool you the fit on these are amazing. As they say don’t judge a book by it’s cover. This has come to be one of my favorite ranges from 2EROS. When I first received my pair of Pikane Biologic Piping Briefs in the mail, I wasn’t so sure about what I saw. They appeared way too small for my size, used a strange combination of colors and felt a little bit weird. I hadn’t tried any other pairs by the brand, and heard good things, so I figured I’d give them a whirl. This particular style comes in three colors–I tried the purple/grey combination.

Before writing this review, I wore the pair for a fairly normal day for me. I rode the bus 45 minutes to work, sat in my office working all day long and then wore them as my pajamas for a night’s sleep. Though I didn’t really have an “active day,” I think this pair would hold up really well regardless of what you’re doing, because the material was so lightweight and comfortable.

I have a 29-inch waist and got a size small. I found the pair to be true-to-size, but definitely on the smaller/tighter end of the scale. They’re also fairly stretchy. The sizing is Columbian..

Overall, I really liked the feel of this pair against my skin, which really surprised me. They’re 100% polyester and I almost never go with that. The material was extremely breathable. My heritage leans heavy on the Italian side, so I can sweat profusely on a typical day. I didn’t experience any of that with these. They also fit surprisingly well–not too tight as I had initially thought they would be when I received them. I think the look is what could use the most improvement. Though the purple-gray combination definitely grew on me, I found both the pattern and the waistband to be a bit cheesy.

Though I initially thought that this pair wasn’t for me, after about 24 hours of wear, I was presently surprised–the fit was perfect, the material comfortable and the look fair. They also passed the boyfriend test–I showed them to him at the end of the day and he thought they were great. To sum up:

Pros:

• The fit might run a bit small for some folks, but overall Pikante’s Biologic Piping Briefs are true-to-size
• The material makes this pair a great choice for any type of day–active, average or just lounging around

Cons:

• The waistband for me was a little to cheesy. I’d like to see them remove the pepper that makes the ‘i” little guy that makes the “t” in Pikante. I saw on their website that they offer several styles with different waistbands
• The design / cut was a little too sexy for my personal taste

This is not my first pair of Zylas underwear but it is my first time reviewing them for UNB. As with my other pairs of Zylas, I am proud to report that the 2908 boxer brief does not disappoint. One thing that I love about Zylas as a brand is that their underwear is multipurpose. It functions great as everyday underwear but also holds up well at the gym and could even work as beachwear (a lot of Zylas styles come in great colors with unique designs that make it easy to show them off).

I wore this pair for a particularly busy Saturday that included some errands and shopping. The 2908 did a great job holding up to the activity of running all over town during a busy day and I have also since worn them around the house for a day loafing and also was pleased with how comfortable they were. This pair goes above and beyond however and was also very comfortable to wear to the gym. My routine on this day featured both weights and cardio which put the pair through their paces and I never had to adjust. Also, this pair wicks moisture like it’s its job… which I suppose it is.

The pair that was supplied for this review was a large (which the tag indicated is 36-38 inches) and fit true to size. The fabric is a nylon/polyester/elastic mix (83/10/7%) which gave great stretch which made the boxer both ideal for everyday wear and working out without any binding or bunching. Finally, though not specified to what level of protection, the tag indicates that the 2908 also provides UV protection (see previous mention of use as beachwear).

The 2908 comes in bright orange with gray, blue and black vertical stripes. The logo waistband features the same shade blue and provides a comfortable, snug fit. This pair also features vertical vents that are slightly more sheer than the body of the garment that run parallel with the stripes and provide breathability without revealing anything they shouldn’t.

The Zylas 2908 is definitely a great pair of boxer briefs for any guy in search of a great-looking, versatile pair that is as comfortable in the office as in the gym. If you don’t own any Zylas, I would definitely suggest trying on a pair for yourself.

Pros:

• Comfortable fabric
• Wicking/breathing great for the gym
• UV Protection
• Great fit

Cons:

• Overall, a great pair. My only complaint is that it needs to be washed on gentle (which isn’t really a complaint

You’re a new brand we ran across on twitter, so tell us why you picked the name with Dilf?

Well, we went with DILF because we wanted to have something that stood out as well as allowed the guys to say something about themselves. I think wearing a waistband that acknowledges that you are a guy others would like to f*ck is a pretty bold move and we approve.

What is your philosophy of making underwear?

We think that they should be comfortable, stylish, and allow you to state something about yourself or your interests. Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of designer names and other brands, but who wants to be a walking billboard all of the time? And what does it say about you other than, “hey, I like Brand X.” We wanted to give men something that made them feel confident and maybe even a little cocky while covering a basic need that almost all men have: underwear. We wanted to make something for the every day man. One of the things at the forefront of our mind when creating our style is that not everyone is a 28 in. waist poster model/Gym Bunny. Hey, they look good in them too but so does the dude next door.

 What styles do you currently offer?

Dilf by Dilf Pickle is our premiere style. It’s a comfortably cut boxer brief with a generous front pouch that says “DILF” along the waist. It’s currently available in Black, White and Grey.

 Any plans for the future you can share?

Ahh! Secrets of the trade. Well, as I mentioned we want to give men something so they can make a statement about themselves. We will be carrying that theme throughout our designs in the future. This is going to be an unusual review for two reasons: 1) it’s the first review I’ve ever written (for anything… ever), and 2) the review concerns a pair of underwear that is more likely to be found at a Target than from the specialty retailers online.  So bear with me.  Hopefully Tim and the gang won’t beat me up and take my lunch money on my first day.

I’ll start with the facts.  The pair I’m reviewing is the Jockey “Cuffed Trunk” (insert party favor noise here).  There is nothing exotic about these.  It’s everything you would expect from a trunk style boxer brief in terms of cut, fit, and materials.  Jockey offers this pair in three colors; hibiscus, olive, and blue indigo.  The material is a blend; 48% cotton/48% modal/ 4% spandex.

To test these out I wore them to work.  My job straddles the fence between white collar and blue collar.  I spend about half of my day pointing and clicking but the rest is usually spent outdoors wearing coveralls and a hard hat.  Being on my feet and performing physical tasks puts all of my clothes through a proverbial gauntlet (hence the coveralls).  So finding a comfortable pair of underwear that can hold up over 12 hours is like finding a unicorn.

Sizing of this pair is consistent with domestic (U.S.) size charts.  My waist is roughly 32″ but depending on the brand of underwear I wear either a small or a medium.  In this case I chose small and it worked just fine.  It was very comfortable, not too snug at all.  I think their choice of materials is partially responsible.  The cotton/modal blend is very soft, but strikes a good balance between comfort and support.

The thing that most impressed me about this pair was that it looked and felt really good over the entire workday.  It’s very common that a pair of underwear will accomplish only one of these.  Either it will be very comfortable but look like a train wreck by the end of the day, or it will look great but feel awful after a few hours.  Let me tell you how much I enjoy having to adjust my underwear at a work site (insert sound of crickets here).

This pair remained stable over my entire workday.  By ‘stable’ I mean that it did not droop, sag, or wander into places it shouldn’t have.  As far as the pair looking good, I am going mostly by the feedback from my fiance.  She really enjoys seeing me in these as her loiter time in the bathroom while I shave has increased by roughly 800%.  Jockey has chosen some colors and contrast stitching that are just far enough from mainstream to make them visually appealing without being flamboyant.  I picture the scenario in which I have a job-related accident and have to be resuscitated by EMTs.  Do I want my co-workers to see me wearing a pink thong while being defibrillated?  Not really.  But not worry, these will send the message that you’re a man dammit… but you might listen to Annie Lennox occasionally.

As far as drawbacks, it’s hard to pick apart a pair that I enjoy as much as these.  I am, however, going to knock them down a notch by mentioning that the construction of this pair is roughly equivalent to any other chain store bought pair of underwear. They’re fine, but not great.  I fully expect that sometime in the next few months the first visible frayed end of a seam or waistband elastic will rear its ugly head.

I MUST mention here that I bought this pair at the price of 2 for $12 from the Jockey website.  I’ve owned enough ‘fancy’ underwear to know that other brands who shall remain nameless would easily charge double for an equivalent pair.

To sum things up:

Pros

• Very comfortable material and level of support
• ‘dimensionally stable’ even with moderate physical activity
• Your significant other will suddenly look at you as if you’re the guy from those ‘Old Spice’ commercials
• For what you get, these are dirt cheap

Cons

• Don’t expect these to hold up forever.  Mass produced just like most of our clothes.

One thing I love more then anything is to bring you guys new underwear. Some of you out there may know Alpha+Omega underwear, but I”m betting a large part of our readers may not bee too familiar with the brand. The pair we chose to profile today is the Sling Brief. You maybe asking why did we choose this pair? Well, the design is the main reason. The pouch is attached  at the bottom and on two places on the waist band for the pouch is able to hang free and move with your body. You can’t see it in the picture but the pouch has access from either side. To me it’s a really cool design.

The color is offset by the contrasting black trim on a light blue fabric. Speaking of the fabric the pair is made out of a 95% Cotton 5% Lycra blend. So it will be soft against your body.

This week, I had the pleasure of reviewing Pikante’s new 9227 Sporty Jockstrap. It’s one of those jockstraps that looks like a brief from the front and most of the side, but then sneaky, you turn around, and there’s a big ol’ opening framing your booty. I am not too familiar with Pikante, I think I probably only have one or two of their pairs, and they are both trunks or boxer briefs. As you might know if you follow my reviews, I am somewhat weary of mesh material in underwear, due to a bad experience with a certain pair along time ago (in summary, I had to return and get the next size up, not once, but twice, before I realized the mesh on that pair just DIDN’T stretch, and wasn’t meant for people with butts), but recently, I have come in contact with happier mesh underwear, and this was no exception. Right when I opened the package and saw the mesh, I pulled at the fabric in both directions to check. So, I opened the package to see what mostly looked like a brief, except for that big opening in the back. The waistband and edges of all of the openings are a black material, with the waistband featuring Pikante’s woven in logo. The entirety of the garment is made up of the white spandex mesh. The briefy jock is also available in sunny yellow with a bright teal trim, black with purple trim, and yellow with black trim (but note that on the yellow pair, the waist band is also yellow, not black).

I got to wear my pair on my New York city weekendcation. I wore it while walking around NYC seeing the sites, buying sewing supplies, and visiting the MET. I did also had a date that night, with a nice guy I’ve seen a few times, (not to get too graphic, but he thought the pair looked really nice as well). I didn’t work out in the pair, so I can’t completely attest to it’s workout-ability, but from wearing it, I can say it stayed in place and (obviously, due to the mesh) breathed very well. I’d imagine this would be a VERY nice workout pair.

The size I got sent was a Large, which fit me wonderfully. Looking at the size chart, the Large is a 32-34 and XL is a 34-36. Depending on the brand, I base my size off of a 35/36, so I would have bought the XL, ESPECIALLY since this was a mesh pair, thinking the mesh wouldn’t stretch nicely. I find the Large to fit very well, and I would say, if you might be near straddling two sizes, order the size smaller, because the mesh is very accommodating.

I wanna start by saying the pair is very comfortable and I like it very much. The small things that I have problems with aren’t big enough that it truly hurts my opinion of this pair. Think of them as things to keep in mind, before you go ahead and order this pair (heehee). Mostly, my issues revolve around the butt straps. They are really wide, and there is elastic trim hemming the edges (both around the thighs, and around the butt-framing edge). This creates a strap with a much sturdier edge than middle, whereas a standard elastic strapped jock would be equal tension across the entire strap. I found that this, mixed with my nice muscular but sizable, demanded some “dressing” when I first put the pair on. However, once the pair was properly on, I found no real need to adjust the straps any more. The next negative might only be towards a specific audience; if you like some support from under your junk in your undies, read on. I like the anatomical pouches and the lift and protrude-type undies, as well as my normal tighter briefs and things, because I like keeping my goodies in their pouch. If a pair of undies doesn’t have enough tension from behind pulling the bottom of the pouch into your perennial region, it allows enough slack that some of your “treasures” might fall out of the “chest”. I found that to adjust for that slack, i’d just discretely grab the straps from the back and pull them up a bit. It wasn’t horrible, but it did happen a couple times.

Having said those two things, I really did like this pair of undies. They were extremely comfortable, with a sexy look to them. As I said previously, this pair has definitely helped me start to overcome my avoidance of the mesh type underwear. I wanna get the black with purple pair for myself as well. Cause I can’t say I am a white underwear guy at heart, but I do know I’ll be wearing this pair a lot in the future (especially to the gym, I wanna try that out).

PROs:

• Very comfortable stretchy mesh.
• Very breathable to wear in warm weather.
• Sexy look (approved by myself as well as an outside eye).
• Cute, non standard color combinations.

CONs:

• very small amount of fuss to get on and dress the back straps properly.
• Not perfectly fitted to keep the goodies in the pouch.

Brandon: Underwear labels clearly don’t shy away from sexing up/playing into the gay-factor with their ads. Does the prevalence of designer underwear labels and the chiseled male models in their ad campaigns play any role in the gay male’s body image? (I know I’ve shied away from certain lines because I’ve had to pause and think, yeah that looks great on this guy with a 31″ waist, but I am too fat to pull it off…)

Tim: Yes definitely it plays an image in a gay man’s body image. Every guy wants to look good in their undies. As a gay guy, seeing a hot guy in undies will make me look at the ad or box cover and think many guys will do the same. It’s also a way to get a new brand noticed. Show some hot guys in underwear and it spreads around the net. I think part of the purchase of underwear is we want to look as good as the model does in the picture. In marketing it’s “If I buy this underwear I will look as good as the model”.

You bring a point to the bigger issue regardless of sexual orientation. How many of us really look like male models? Most of us are Real guys and we want to know how underwear will fit an average guy. It’s something I have dealt with on the UNB site. We all agree on a buff underwear model with at 32 waist and six pack abs anything would look good on them. I hear from guys all the time that they want to see more pictures in reviews and on the site in general on how underwear looks on real guys. It’s sort of a double edge sword. One one hand you can post real guys in underwear, like our guides, but get comments like “They shouldn’t be wearing that” “those are not models” and my favorite “That guy is too fat to wear those undies.” when the model was a 32 waist but a bigger build. To take it back to your main question, I’m a bigger guy too, we’re roughly the same height and build, and have debated putting self pics on my reviews. Being gay putting pics up of me in undies is something that I am not looking forward to comments about how I look. I have shared some with friends but broadcasting to the larger audience makes me very nervous. I have worked really hard to loose weight and be able to fit in the undies we now report on. I think now I’m getting to a build that reflects many of our readers. So your “I’m too fat” comment strikes so close to home. I just have it in my head that May guys will comment “Oh he should know that he shouldn’t wear underwear like that cause he’s fat..” I am going to post a self pic on a review soon to gauge the interest and comments but it’s not something I am looking forward too!

I know brands need to sell underwear and let’s face it sex sells. Not just in men’s underwear but in just about any product category. Plus I think the gay audience is still more open to having more sexually suggestive ads in underwear. As I have stated in this Q&A when it gets to the main stream they don’t want to offend the audience. That’s a whole other can of worms to open. It’s starting to change but it’s not going to be over night. We are seeing that slowly change. The prime example is the new Calvin Klein ad that ran in this last years Super Bowl. Unlike the David Beckham H&M ad you saw all the underwear. This is a giant step forward to when we used to have men’s underwear ads and never show the underwear on a person.

That’s how I felt about socks maybe six months ago. Since then, my attitude has totally changed, just like it did about underwear about six years ago. And I think after you take the plunge, you’ll feel the same way.

So you’re probably wondering, what brand changed my attitude? The answer is Happy Socks. I had just finished working a freelance job, heard a rave review from a friend and figured I’d give the brand a whirl since I had a little bit of extra cash. I feel in love instantly. I work in a fairly conservative office environment, and I’ve found that I can use socks like these to add a touch of color and fun to the everyday drab. Designed in Sweden and manufactured in Turkey, Happy Socks offer the best comfort out there in addition to their cute, fun style. The brand prides itself on quality above all else, and I’ve found their claims to be true. I love the pairs that I have, and since I’m wearing them all the time, I’m washing them all the time. Despite that fact, I haven’t had any problems with shrinking or fading.

If the $12 a piece price tag makes you a cringe you a bit, have no fear. Of the five or so pairs I currently own, I’ve only a bought a few straight from the manufacturer. I’ve regularly seen the brand on eBay and on flash sale sites like Gilt.com at steep discounts. Check them out!

Chances are you’ve heard of TOMS Shoes. The company revolutionized how people think about charity and corporate social responsibility by donating a pair of shoes to a person in a developing country for every pair of shoes it sold in the developed world. PACT is underwear’s answer to TOMS.

On its website, the company describes itself as a “movement disguised as a clothing company.” It has three basic principles: good design, good fabric and good cause.

Each season, the company features lines of underwear and socks that were inspired by good causes. But let’s step back for a second to the first two principles. When PACT says good design, they mean it. The designs are simple, but cute; they’re mostly solid or simple-patterned bodies with solid-colored waistbands. It was actually the designs that first attracted me to the brand. I was perusing a few flash deal sites, as I often do, and I noticed a pair of boxer briefs for $10. I had a bit of extra cash, so I gave them a try and was pleasantly surprised.

That brings me to what impressed me about the brand most, its good fabrics. The pair I got was super soft, and has remained so even after several washes in just a few weeks. That spectacular softness comes from special care. From the field to the shelf, the company is meticulous about using clean and responsible practices. All the cotton used is organic and fair-trade, every factory is sweat-shop free and the packaging is printed with vegetable-based inks in a wind-powered facility.

Over the course of the blog fewer things have brought controversy like bringing up date night underwear. That is because to each guy “Date night underwear” means something different. Underwear is personal and date night underwear is even more so!

We decided to break down a few categories of date night underwear and have you guys tell us which pair you wear and why?

Classic Underwear – We don’t mean the tighy whities that come in a six pack. Rather a brief/boxer brief that is no frills. I haven’t ever worn a pair of Zylas underwear before, so when I got the 4034 Brief in the mail, I was excited to try them out. Once I had them in my hands I had a mixed first impression. The brief is mostly made of Nylon, an underwear fabric that I haven’t had much luck with. While I am not a huge fan of the 70s inspired conglomeration of greens and vertical stripes, these briefs do have some style to them.

Another first reaction before I had before I got them on was the size of the waist, it looked too small to match the sizing chart for what a Zylas XL brief should be (34-36). Once I got them on, my initial impression seemed accurate, as the waist was a little snug.  You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that when it comes to men’s briefs, if the waist is snug, it’s likely going to be snug in all the wrong places too, but this turned out to be only partially true. I decided to wear them for a full work day to really put the brief through its paces. While I was nervous about how the brief would hold up, with its blend of nylon and spandex, these briefs stood the test of a busy day.

I did have an issue with sizing, when I peeled them off in the evening, I did have quite the “imprint” on my 36″ waist but over the course of the day, I wasn’t experiencing any discomfort around my waist. As with many Latin/South American brands, these weren’t made with U.S. sizing. While there are several brands that can get away with this, the XL at 34-36 is going to be too small if you’re wearing a 36 pant size. Quite honestly, I’d say if you’re wearing a 34 jean, you’ll want to go with the XL.

As I mentioned above, I haven’t been a huge fan of some of the nylon pairs in my collection, but the way this brief uses nylon I was pleasantly surprised. The fabric had vertical perforations throughout, making the briefs very breathable, so that helped score this brief some points.  As far as the look of this brief, I am of two minds. Green is one of, if not my favorite color, but it can be overdone and the penchant Zylas has for vertical stripes overall, could be re-thought. While I appreciate the attempt, I am not a fan of the 1970s fashion trend of purposefully clashing several shades of the same color together, but I think this brief could have really been tied together well if the waistband and the elastic leg openings were the same shade of green as one of the stripes in the brief, instead it’s a lighter lime which clashes with the neon green stripes that feature prominently.

The style of the brief is described as an “almost bikini” and there has been a bit of a pickup of this type of style across several different labels. When you wear this style it certainly feels a little more comfortable and less boxy than a traditional cut brief and that is good. If I had to make one complaint overall though, it would be that this style does not lend itself to the ample pouch that my anatomy requires. That is not to say I felt too crammed in these briefs, but this brief certainly does not feature a contour pouch, which is something I need.

We just completed our Swimwear Survey and the majority of yous said you wanted a bikini or swim brief. However there are some great swim suits you should check out, the 2(x)ist School of Fish Square Cut is one of those pairs. This is a pair I was looking forward to seeing out on the market.

When I got to meet with Jason Scarlotti he said that they wanted to do a stripe but wanted it to be different. The fish pattern definitely fits that bill. The fish make up stripes with the different colors. It’s great to see this level of creativity in a pair of swimwear. More and more underwear/swim wear companies are thinking outside the box.

Tim: Brands I don’t think are are intentionally omitting straight guys. They are going where the sales are currently. As they see the dollar shift, which is happening right now, you will see advertising to all types of consumers. Let’s say we have you as the marketing manager of a big underwear brand. How would you bring awareness and sell underwear to a broader audience? What would be important?

Brandon: In order to reach a broader audience you really need to focus on changing the purchasing habits of consumers. 7 out of 10 pairs made for men are bought by women? I think an ad campaign that shames the (largely straight) population with that fact and presenting a look at what they’re missing would be ideal. Obviously the cost of doing so would far outweigh the new revenue from the underwear, so long as the market remains the same. For straight men, availability is key. Andrew Christian signed a deal with Nordstrom. I talked to a retail sales person at the huge Nordstrom on Michigan Ave in Chicago last summer who said the biggest repeat customers who came back in to snap up more AC stuff seemed to clearly be straight. There are plenty of men out there that would benefit from the technology offered in the underwear of many of the top brands, but consumers don’t typically go looking for something they don’t know exists. Maybe I am leading into another question here, but the way I see it, gay men provide a humongous consumer base for designer underwear brands, as do straight guys who “care”, so it’s not too difficult to think these brands like the exclusivity their products bring.

Tim: I think you are spot on with this observation. Right now the purchasing is by gay guys and women. But more and more guys are buying underwear. Which is an awesome thing. I think that blogs like ours and brands need to show guys what is out there in the world of underwear. It is a big area of market growth or any company who can reach that consumer. In an ideal world I’d love to go out on the street and give guys great pairs of underwear and have them try them. Because the truth is in the pudding as they say. Once you wear great undies you can’t imagine going back to anything else. One issue with having straight guys buying undies is the stigma that guys have that because you wear something out of the ordinary (brief, jock or thong) they get joked or branded that they are gay. This I think is one big barrier for guys who want to try undies from going out and getting them. An example of this is I had a reader years ago email me and say he had to get rid of his thongs because his then girlfriend said they were “gay.” I was like WHAT?

Tim: What would it take to get the word out to straight guys about underwear? What draws you to a brand? What Brands have you tried because of their advertising? Have you dealt with the stigma of being called or labeled gay?

Brandon: Well, as you know, I have written extensively about this topic on UNB. I think getting the word out is going to have to be incidental, maybe it’s a friend who sees me in the locker room at a pool in a pair of briefs and gets inquisitive. I think to a certain extent straight guys like myself need to be less shy and start evangelizing a bit. I have taken baby steps in that regard but I think that straight guys should be more vocal, because the bottom line is plenty of straight men out there would acknowledge that they’d like to be wearing better underwear, but as I kind of hinted at with my last answer, they just don’t know where to start.

I am rarely drawn to “the brand” because I am always interested in the style/color/overall look of a pair of underwear before I consider the brand. If I like the look of a certain brief that’s what draws me to any given pair. While this might be hard to believe, I don’t think a single ad has drawn me to a brand. I’ve always tried new things based on the look or the description of the individual pair. I was drawn to CK and 2(x)ist because of their reputation. I was drawn to Andrew Christian because initially-when he wasn’t nearly as famous, he described the “Anatomically Correct” pouch as built for men who were well endowed. That was before any of the homo-erotic videos or poster-ads became the brand’s M.O. but I can tell you if I were thinking about my first pair of A.C. briefs today, I’d be more apprehensive as a straight guy.

Sure, I’ve dealt with it in very limited terms. My dad is hypercritical of me and what I wear, look like, etc. He’s caught glimpses of my underwear from time to time and has been sure to never reserve comment. “That’s kind of gay” he’ll say but does so with sort of a smile on his face, as if he acknowledges his own status of being behind-the-times in his Jockey brand boxer shorts. Other than that, I’ve never had to deal with it really. That said, I am always conscious of “being caught” in my underwear by my friends etc because of the fear of being judged in that same way.

Underwear labels clearly don’t shy away from sexing up/playing into the gay-factor with their ads. Does the prevalence of designer underwear labels and the chiseled male models in their ad campaigns play any role in the gay male’s body image? (I know I’ve shied away from certain lines because I’ve had to pause and think, yeah that looks great on this guy with a 31″ waist, but I am too fat to pull it off…)

I reviewed a new arrival to the Zylas performance line called their “striped brief” Perhaps it is lost in translation, but the naming of this product is less than creative, so to be precise, this is the 4033—the black “brief brief”.

When I first saw Zylas a few months ago on an online apparel store, I was not immediately drawn to them. The briefs seemed much fuller than I usually prefer to wear, and I almost never boxer briefs, which makes up most of their standard line. I tend to like underwear that is skimpier, at least in the front, but always I’m willing to have an open mind when it comes to new underwear.

When I opened my package for this weeks review, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw—a sexy looking, attractive brief with vertical stripes and a waistband that subtly announced what I would be wearing to the rest of the world. I generally don’t “advertise” what I’m wearing (at least while I’m wearing pants or shorts), but if you do, Zylas seems to be a good choice for that.) It was made of 83% nylon, 10% polyester and 7% spandex. The label said it was “wicking, stretch, easy care and UV protection”—I planned to test all of those monikers, except for the last.

I did my standard daily routine I do when trying out any new underwear—a full day at work, getting up and down a lot; a 2 hour workout out in the gym; and changing afterwards at the gym to I could catch the “peer reviews” of the guys in the locker room to the new duds. The Zylas brief seemed well constructed, and held up great, despite an intense two-hour Mixed Martial Arts workout. The fabric wicked sweat away surprisingly well for nylon and polyester and the Lycra in the material allowed it to stretch well and not chafe at all.

I liked the look of this brief from the get go. There was a very slight descending line into the middle of the waist band, giving others the impression of smaller waist. The legs were high cut, allowing for freedom of movement and the wide waist band sat comfortably below the waist. The pictures online made this product look like a full brief, but I would classify it as a low rise. The fabric was somewhat sheer and shiny—in a way that invited others to look without giving away all the goods. The stripes, in brown and highlighted in white, gave the overall package a racy look, and there was plenty of space in the front for a good sized package.

However, Zylas is a Colombian company, and its sizing is designed for South American standard.  I usually wear a small or medium (at most) in American standard. I wore a medium brief for this review, and it was most definitely too small—in the waist and in the butt.  Granted, I have a big (but muscular) butt—but, I would need a size two sizes larger than what I usually wear to  feel fully comfortable moving around and being seen in Zylas. I know it’s a hit to the ego to have to bump up two sizes to feel comfortable (from small to large), but hey—it’s only fabric

I noticed the pair riding up in back all day while I was wearing them. My opinion was confirmed by a guy in the locker room, who mentioned that I seemed to “falling out” my underwear. The back coverage of this Zylas brief was a bit too skimpy for me. Now, if you are less well endowed in the glutes than I am, you would most likely love it—so don’t let my problem with it dissuade you from getting some. Incidentally, I tried on a size larger, but still felt like I was hanging a bit in the back.

Overall, once the sizing issue was addressed, I did like the Zylas black striped brief. It had a racy, almost sheer appearance designed to get approving looks, fit well in the waist (in the appropriate size), and front, but was just a bit skimpy in the back. The construction held up well and especially after washing, was very comfortable to wear.  It moved well during work and play, left me dry even after an intense workout, and made me feel sexy—which is what all good underwear should do.

The pair of underwear I am reviewing is the ZYLAS Boxer #3078.  Before I tried these on, I enjoyed feeling the soft, shiny black fabric with partially see through stripes mixed among a bright lemon yellow pattern.  The waistband was the same lemon yellow that was the pattern in the fabric with ZYLAS woven into the waistband in an almost metallic thread.  There was a ZYLAS Underwear label centered on the back on the boxer.  The waistband is about 1.5 inches in width and very comfortable with no binding or bunching issues during wearing.  The slight pouch became quite accommodating once I had the boxer on.  This boxer was pieced together to create an extremely comfortable and form fitting pair of underwear that everyone would enjoy.  This boxer comes in several contrasting color combinations that anyone would love.  This is my first, but not last pair of ZYLAS underwear, and I enjoyed being able to try them.

While wearing this pair of underwear, I went about my normal daily activities for work.  I administered assessments to three clients and sat and stood approximately fourteen hours while wearing this extremely comfortable pair of boxers.  It was a busy day filled with lots of movement and activity.  The pair fit well, did not bunch up, did not ride up, and felt like I was not wearing a bulky pair of underwear due to the nice, slick fabric that never clung to my khaki pants.  This pair is more of a fashion pair of underwear and I would hesitate to wear it as exercise wear, but I feel it would hold up to strenuous and rigorous workouts.

I received a size extra large in this boxer.  This size should cover a 34-36 pant size.  Sizing was not true to size as I am a large in the vast majority of underwear, but this is a nonissue as the company tells you that the XL is a 34-36” size.

I loved the black fabric with see through stripes and bright lemon coloring (83%Nylon, 10%Polyester, 7%Spandex) as it was stretchy and conforming to the body.  The pouch was slight, but stretchy and conforming to the bits.  I loved the seam that ran along the rear from the leg openings in the rear across the buttocks as I felt it provided more shape and definition to my bum.  There is nothing about this pair of boxers that I did not like.  Someone was thinking when they designed them as everything about them seemed geared towards pleasing the wearer.
Overall, this was a nice pair of underwear and I felt sexy and comfortable at the same time while wearing them.  The design is conforming to the body and creates a fantastic profile.  I have enjoyed viewing the other ZYLAS underwear options and look forward to trying some more of the pairs they have to offer.

I thought N2N Bodywear came out with a huge line already but now the have released a line of  Jammer in 17 HOT prints. I went to the N2N site to look something up and this was on the front page and was like “wait a minute.” To say I was shocked is an understatement. Let’s talk about making swimwear. I am familiar when a company does limited edition suits to do 2-4 but not 17. Some of these fabrics may look familiar to me. Making 2-5 pairs is one thing but doing it for 17 takes a lot more time.. I think N2N has out done themselves.

If you’re not familiar Jammers, they are similar to bike shorts. If you watch the Olympics, Jammers are the suits that the swimmers are now wearing. These N2N Jammers  are made with a front inside drawcord, without a liner and  out of a 83% nylon 17% spandex material. All pairs retail for $30! I reported from Vegas earlier this year that colors are going to be big! Timoteo was one of those collections that proved this statement to be true. The new Pop Out line has been released in some bright fun spring/summer colors. The colors are Sunshine Yellow, Jade, Kelly Green and Candy Pink . These are more on the pastel end rather then super bright primary colors.

The pairs have a classic Timoteo name waistband in black to off set the color. Then they are accented with white piping around the legs and pouch. It’s great to see some fun colors back in men’s underwear

Available in jocks, briefs and boxer briefs. They aren’t on the Timoteo site yet, but you can find it at some of your favorite stores soon!
