Many of you have been hearing of the new brand Oryx. Its the creation of model Eric Turner. Eric has been modeling since 2004. I met him in 2010 and have kept in touch with him over the years. Not only doe he do amazing pictures but he took his many years of modeling to create a company. He took that knowledge and created Oryx.

I had the chance to talk to him about the line when he was just formulating the company. He has such a passion for the the brand and is going to make an amazing line. He’s not just putting his name on the brand he’s involved with every aspect of the company. So I’m super excited to see the line now out!

What is an Oryx? “While on honeymoon in South Africa, Eric saw one of the most beautiful and majestic looking animals he’d ever seen.  It was some sort of antelope with very long, straight, and nearly upright horns.  Being a wikipedia nerd, he quickly learned the animal was a gemsbok, one of 4 species of ORYX.  The way the gemsboks carried themselves, and the majesty and beauty of the creature were mesmerizing.”

The Oryx site is up and you can see a preview of the underwear. Go check it out and it should be up in the next few weeks for ordering.

1779845_742083432541879_7520481130577451151_nLast year I got to try a great company called Blue Collar Underwear. They came on to the scene with a great collection. I reviewed a few pairs and think they did a great job with design and fabrics. So when the new collection came out we had to interview them about the collection. Here is that interview
For our readers who aren’t familiar with your brand, tell us a little about your company?
FL: Blue Collar Underwear is a Texas based brand created to revolutionize the way men feel about their underwear and the way their underwear feel and fit on them. For us, it’s more than business it’s our passion. Blue Collar has nothing to do with the type of work you do but more about the conqueror inside of all of us that makes us fighters and not afraid to get dirty to follow our dreams. We intend to take over the world of underwear one sexy brief at a time and we are totally ok with getting dirty to do so lol10898067_756296647787224_1613408084623595420_n
BlueCollar came on the underwear market pretty strong last year, tell us about the new collection?
FL: The New collection was created with one word in mind “BOLD” as we started planning for the new collection, we took a look over our current collection and thought of ways we could build on our strengths and make a statement at the same time. We wanted unique and fresh color combinations and patterns that you don’t commonly see on underwear. We wanted to challenge underwear consumers to break free from the status quo, so there are completely new styles that will certainly bring out the daredevil is us all
How does this collection differ from the last one?
FL:  We took a big risk with this collection, it’s very bold and different. Almost a complete 360 from our last collection. It’s always a little nerve wrecking when you deviate from a formula that has worked so well for you in the past to just completely tossing the manual out of the window but we totally believe it was worth it.
Unknown-112
Which of the new pieces stand out in your collection?
FL: The City Brief Collection has been one of our most popular products of all, We’ve introduced 2 new colors which we can not seem to keep in stock. Also, I completely love the “Smack dat” handprint trunk which is has an amazing cut to it  once you try it on you will not leave the store without it and the Challenger Briefs” I have a couple others but I’ll start with those 3.
How has this collection been received?
FL: It’s been very well received, which is so refreshing to us. There was so much anticipation built on the release of the new season and it was extremely important that we not disappoint our followers and our retail partners.
What makes Blue Collar Underwear different from other brands?
FL: For us, it’s all about our customers and giving them our best product possible. They are the heart and soul of the brand and the reason why we are able to do what we do. I think a lot of brands forget the reason why they are here and lose their identity and the focus starts to shift to everything but what matters which is providing your consumers which the exceptional product they are entitled to.
Where can our readers buy your underwear and find you online?
FL: Online They can find us at www.Bluecollarunderwear.com – We’re also sold in the following retail stores and cities. If their city is not listed, they can go into their local Men’s underwear retailer and ask for Blue Collar Underwear.
Retail Outlets:
  • Dallas, TX  – Skivvies & Skivvies Outlet

  • Phoenix, AZ – OffChutetoo

86555957c18dd6e49f692ed937da40dcRecently, I posted an amazing Calvin Klein ad from the ‘80s on Twitter and asked the question “Should we bring back ads like this?”

Recently, I tweeted an amazing Calvin Klein ad from the 80’s and asked the question “Should we bring back ads like this?” That prompted a great conversation with one of our followers about Jim Palmer and other ads from the 70’s and 80’s. The funny thing is the follower is 25, so he wasn’t even born when many of the ads ran, but had a big appreciation for the ads.

cohen-ronaldo
Looking back at ads of that time, they featured sports stars of the day. The biggest and most well- known was Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles. He graced the pages of People magazine wearing just a pair of Jockey Elance and a smile! Do you think you would see Derek Jeter in underwear ads these days? Nope! Very few American athletes endorse underwear. In European countries and Australia, for example, athletes like Ben Cohen and Cristiano Ronaldo are not only modeling in and endorsing underwear lines but also creating their own.

Earlier this week, I checked on my storage unit – seems like my entire life is kept there these days – and noticed a box was collapsing. While reorganizing the boxes, I discovered a plastic notebook containing my underwear ads and decided to bring them home. I’ve been thinking of framing them, rather than storing them in a binder.

These recent events made me think. Are underwear ads art?

70s-underwear-ads
I loved that the 70’s ads were more staged like a guy preparing for his day, getting dressed or shaving. This was the start of the sports starts dropping their trousers and showing underwear. Jockey had the best underwear ads out there. Some may think, “Jockey? Really?” But yes, they brought color and bikini cuts to the men’s underwear world, breaking away from the traditional “tighty whities”. The ads definitely showed off the difference in their underwear, but still looked like classic ads.

The 80’s brought us the Calvin Klein ad (see main image) with the model in white briefs against the white wall. This definitely looked much more like a work of art than an ad. These ads were noticed throughout the fashion industry and the public. They sparked stories in mainstream media, on shows such as Entertainment Tonight, and other outlets. CK produced other ads (one where the same model is taking off his shirt), but none received the same attention. This iconic ad prompted other underwear companies to produce more artistic ads.

mark-y-marj-nick-jonas

Calvin Klein continued to dominate the market with their ads in the ‘90s, not only for the underwear but also for the models selected. One of the first, and most notorious, was Mark Wahlberg. Marky Mark, at the time, was all over billboards in Times Square in the popular black and white CK ads. He posted in his underwear when few would even talk about men’s underwear. (I believe these ads sparked the boxer brief craze that is still alive today.)

The next decade saw a change in men’s underwear ads. Print publications were losing circulation – mainstream magazines didn’t include many ads, but gay magazines continued. The ads were getting more expensive with less return. So what did the brands do? They turned to the internet, getting their images out to a wider audience. The brands started producing amazing pics of their underwear.

4c8a84141bd58_dpp_019_1
Like many others, the online pictures caught my eye and were the main reason I discovered many new brands, like Cocksox. I saw the first pictures of Earl Sandor modeling the red CX01, and knew I needed a pair right then! Gone were the days of basic product shots. We wanted to see more lifestyle pictures, rather than close-up shots.

Other brands have begun making some great ads as well…

tumblr_m48dvbG0ur1rszxxjo1_1280
C-IN2 produced the series “Jail”, which was very provocative and ahead of its time. It told a story rather than just show off the underwear. After a few years, they followed with another series (shot by photographer Rick Day – see the pic at the bottom) titled “Parole”. C-IN2 accompanied their photo work with videos on YouTube. The used the stories from the photos and videos to create advertising campaigns. This brand continues to produce some of those most creative ads in the world of underwear in recent years.

1923204_57247328324_4833192_n
When 2EROS first came on the market in 2007-2008, they had amazing retro-inspired pictures that went along with the great background and glasses for their Victory line. Each collection since has added more and more amazing pictures. They use backgrounds, such as beaches, to show off their underwear and swimwear. The current collections feature model Ryan Greasley (shot by Simon Le). They don’t create a story behind their lines, like C-IN2, but consistently deliver great pictures.

2Varsity3b
Underwear Nation has turned underwear advertising into an art form. They aren’t a brand, but a retailer. Each month they profile a different pair for the Underwear of the Month Club and create a campaign around it. Their photographer, Jerrad Matthew, has done some of the hottest work in men’s underwear. The locker room campaign for the Timoteo Varsity series stands out most. In it, model Justin Leonard wears the blue and white underwear against a backdrop of a red locker room, allowing the underwear to really stand out. They create a new campaign for each month’s pair. Club subscribers get a post card featuring that month’s ad along with the underwear. (I’ve told them they need to create posters of the amazing pictures!)

There are so many other companies that I wish I could cover here, but that would be a super long post. We at Underwear News Briefs will continue to discuss and showcase the brands’ photography. We all love the amazing pictures, but we’re not knocking any brands not mentioned. Photography is one of the most expensive things about men’s underwear (I know from experience shooting our guides!), and not every brand has that amount of time and money. We want to spotlight some that are doing it right and creating images that could easily be hung on the wall as art.
Anthony-Gallo-Chris-Whelan-and-Diogo-De-Castro-Gomes-for-C-IN2-underwear-ad-campaign-05
I’ve profiled just a few that stick out in my head, but there are tons more out there doing amazing work! Future featured brands include: Modus Vivendi, aussieBum, Marcuse, and Teamm8.

What brands do you think make works of art with their pictures and ads?

black-1I am a super fan of bikinis. Bikinis were the first style I ever bought myself. I could no longer deal with the ill fitting tighty whites. So when I ventured to the store I couldn’t resist and when I felt how they fit. I was hooked from that day forward. Lately though the bikinis have been few and far between. Most are fuller cut or trunks. I still have a longing for the bikini cut.

The other day I ran across the Jordano Basics Bikini and i said to myself “Here is an amazing bikini cut I grew up on!” Jordano made a really simple cut bikini, which I think is the brilliance of the pair. Sometimes simple really is best! It has a full back and smaller sides with a pouch.

The sizing maybe a big wonky its listed as s/m, m/l and l/xl. The sizing listed as Size S/M 27-30 M/L 30-33. If you’re a bigger guy like me, this pair may not work for you, which has me super upset. On a good note the bikinis are made out of a 92% cotton 8% spandex blend. The colors are available in green, black and white.

I just wanted to point these out to you guys and the bikini fans out there. This ships from Mexico so allow up to 28 days for delivery. Find them at the JRDN Basics page

ModusVivendiBearLine (4)Modus Vivendi is proud to kick start the new year with the release of the sixth part of its 2015 campaign in which each line from its new collection is presented in a different location around the world and photographed by a selected photographer, reputed for his outstanding skills and unique style.

The five locations around the world we have visited so far are: Leicester, England (Pride Line), Newport Beach, USA (Military Line), Thessaloniki, Greece (Wolf Line), Madrid, Spain (Buddha Line) and Aix en Provence, France (Masai Line). Now we take you back to Spain and one of its southern-most regions, Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where the outstanding photographer Adrian C. Martin has photographed the new Modus Vivendi Bear Line. Well-known for its natural beauty, this location was chosen by the photographer as the back-drop for his session with Fran Otero. Martin produces a shoot full of masculinity, which ideally suits the Bear Line: strong, sexy and yet at the same time serene.

ModusVivendiBearLine (8)

The Bear Line itself, which comprises new underwear and sportswear in two tones of grey (light grey and carbon grey) with hints of orange and red, is a line dedicated to highlighting a man’s best assets. Note Modus Vivendi’s new take on enhancing underwear, with three different cuts. There is also a handsome sleeveless, the Henley-style shirt and new, highly comfortable sweat shorts. These are all innovative designs, the outcome of untold hours of testing, not only on paper but also on real models, and, of course, manufacturing that is second to none.

aussieBum is known for their Valentine’s underwear. Every year they create some special limited edition pairs. My personal favorite was the Love Bunnies in the hipster. It was produced in 2010 and I missed getting a pair! They were super fun.

The current pair they have released is called Sweetheart. ” This Valentine’s Day aussieBum brings you the limited edition “Sweethearts” range! These sexy, shiny and super-comfortable boxer shorts feature one of our custom prints especially for your Valentine. Get them now – they are the perfect gift for you or that someone special.?”

These are boxers but short cut and very sexy. They remind me of one of the first pairs I remember seeing from them in 2009. It was a red/white heart print and I still have the box it came in and I use it for other things. The boxers are still in my drawer and worn them a few times. These are a shiny fun print of Sweetheart hearts you get on Valentine’s Day. I do like the print a lot. I wished they had in a brief and hipster but I would wear them regardless. This is also available in red.

If you are looking for a great pair of undies for Valentine’s Day Check out the new Sweetheart from aussieBum. They are retailing for $25.24

There is a new brand that has just blown up in the last month. That brand is EppureLuca and they basically came out of no where! I saw a few guys post pictures in the brand on Instagram and Twitter. So I had to investigate! I found them on the net and Facebook.

Before we get into the great undies, they are a company that gives back. They give 10% of every purchase to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Which is awesome for them. Not only can you get amazing undies you can help make the world a better place. Plus, St. Jude’s is a great charity for them to pick!

pietro+porpora+front

The Pietro is the pari I have seen most in the wild! It is a low rise micro sport trunk. The waist band is something awesome. It’s the brand name in an almost rainbow print. It is available in four different colors: purple, green, white and blue. Each pair has the amazing waistband.

donato+plum+front

The Donato is a brief is more of a bikini cut or micro brief. The sides and back are made out of a sports mesh but the pouch is solid. Its a great brief for working out or being active in. It has a branded waistband that is more traditional from the Pietro. Available in 2 colors

stefano+front+bt+salem

The last pair I want to cover is the Stefano. The Stefano is a brief with the same killer waistband. However, it has one big difference the side and back is sheer mesh. So it will leave nothing to the imagination. The pouch is solid fabric and the trim is a contrasting color. It’s super sexy and fun. It is also available in 4 colors.

If you are interested in the other pairs in the Collection go over to the EppureLuca site and check them out. Starting out there are just 7 pairs in the Intimo collection. I’m sure we will see many more collections from them over the next few years.

Andrew Christian has produced a limited edition Wrestling Singlet. As I have said so many time, Wrestling Singlets are the new must have in men’s sports/eroticwear. Notice I said both, some singlets you can wear to the gym and others are just for the bedroom! Which one of the types of singlets is this? I would say it’s def an erotic singlet. It’s super low cut and has a great pouch.

This singlet is made out of 80% Polyester, 20% Spandex fabric. It feel great and hold up to any activity you do in it. The color combinations are retro inspired to look like singlets from days gone by. The neon trim will glow under black lights, so if you wanted to wear out to a bar night you will def stand out in the crowd.

The pouch is a hang free design. Meaning there are no straps or anything to enhance. This is probably my favorite pouch design Andrew Christian has done. It feels and fits amazing. The pouch is one thing they really pay attention with and have become to be known for pouches that fit a guy so well.

If you’re looking for a sexy fun singlet. The Andrew Christian Wrestling singlet is for you! Each color is a limited edition that retails for $47.93

I know we have many fans of MMA fighting that read our blog. But did you know Lonsdale a brand that makes MMA and boxing gear has their own line of underwear? I didn’t know this till I was surfing Tumblr and ran across the Lonsdale brand. I had never seen it before so I Googled it and found out its part of the Sports supplier!

Their underwear “Whether for sports or casual wear, we have a great range of stylish and supportive men’s underwear including boxers, briefs and trunks. Lonsdale has introduced a range of limited edition boxers, including the orange style as worn by Tom ‘Kong’ Watson. Check out our men’s t-shirts.” The prices are pretty good around £5 for boxer briefs and £4 for briefs.

So what does Lonsdale known for and who are they? “Lonsdale is passionate about boxing, mixed martial arts and great clothing. We pride ourselves in giving our customers quality equipment that will take them to the next level, whether they be amateur or looking to turn professional.” They were established in 1960 so they have been around for over 50 years!

42106903_l

I really love the brief because they are super simple but very classic in styling. The black are my favorite of all the pairs. I think every guy needs a basic pair of black briefs. They are perfect to wear under a suit or in an environment where your underwear may show but you don’t what to have everyone notice your underwear.

If you’re an MMA fan or just want to look like one check out Lonsdale for their underwear and sports gear!

LR_BTMaB13007_Lightening_blueLong Johns are one of the biggest trends in men’s underwear. Its about time that we get fun long johns that are both fashionable and keeps you warm! The old one never fit well and while they kept you warm they didn’t look all that good. aussieBum is one of the latest companies to enter the long johns market. They have gone in a different direction than most and gone with the plaid route!

So what styles are they offering. They have the traditional brief and hipsters with additions of the long johns and shirt. The print itself is one that aussieBum created for the collection. The colors are Hail (green), Storm (red/green) and Wind (blue/white). It has the awesome aussieBum branded waistband which I love. Perfect for low rise jeans.

IS_UNDaB13021_Hipster_Blue_150119140534

aussieBum says this about the line: “The aussieBum “Lightning” Range strikes back with 3 brand new custom engineered prints across the popular brief and hipster underwear styles plus the brand new ankle length long-john cut and long sleeved shirt for the full look! The masculine tartan printed underwear and long-johns are made from the softest Micro Modal which is also featured on the sleeves of the otherwise 100% organic cotton shirt. With three traditional colour variations and our popular super-wide waistband this range truly represents masculinity and comfort in one. Strike now with Lightning!”

IS_UNDaB13021_Brief_Red_150119140202The best thing about the collection is the underwear (briefs and trunks) and long johns are made out of Modal. Which is the most amazing fabric for underwear. I love the feel of this fabric against your skin. If you get the matching shirt its made out of organic cotton, which I know is important to many of our readers.

I hope you head over to the aussieBum site and check out the new line!

Unknown-105So with the New Year come New Years resolutions. One of mine, like millions of other people is to get into better shape. For me, part of the fun of exercising is getting workout clothing. There is such a huge selection now a days that the shopping has been fun.

Now one brand I have always liked has been Under Armour. Their Boxerjock has always proven to be great underwear but also they are great for working out in. They are supportive and they wick the moisture away. Their colors and patterns selections have really grown and I am loving all the choices they offer.

Another brand that I have just added to my workout collection is Nike. I never really noticed their workout underwear but when I was shopping and saw the Nike Compression underwear and ¾ length running pants. I have purchased some of the compression trunks and find them to be very comfy and supportive. Of course the sex appeal is important to me even though no one sees me in them, as my gym is in my home. Their color selection is nice. The waistband is wide with contrasting Nike on it.

As I keep working out I will continue to go shop for workout gear. Anytime you can have a hobby or resolution that gives the opportunity to go underwear shopping you know it’s a good thing. When I find great new workout gear I will post about it here on UNB.

I am sure there are other guys out there who workout and have their favorite brands and styles in workout underwear. Please share your favorites and suggestions with the rest us and help us learn about new brands and styles.

So come on guys, comment and lets get a great conversation going.

Picture from International Jock

Unknown-95I posted on Facebook earlier this month and asked guys what they wanted to try. One of the answers came from Andy who said he was going to try more Asian brands. So I asked which brands he wanted to try, he said Matewas one of them. Mate is a brand I have seen around the net but never really looked at before. If you’re not familar with Asian brands they typically are very skimpy and small. Which is not a bad thing at all in underwear.

When I say skimpy they are lower cut on the body and don’t rise up as high as some American and European underwear. The sizing is very small, certain brands I have known a 34 to be an XL. So that is something you want to pay attention to when buying underwear in general but more so in international purchases. Mate is a brand where 32-34 is XL and 34-36 is XXL.

Mate was founded by Hyun Han in Korea. He spent a few years at a Korean Fashion house then left there and went to Tokyo to lead a women’s lingerie line. During his time there he would stay late and work on designs for himself. He learned to adapt his designs to fit men comfortably and to adapt the sensuousness and sexuality for men. So he took what he learned designing for women and made amazing men’s underwear. What I love best is how they put it on their site “Designed specially for men who know what they want and are unafraid of taking their sex appeal to the next level”

The collections are super sexy. We here in the States can have a very Victorian/Purtanical view and stick to trunks and briefs. Not so with Mate. They have underwear, swimwear, loungewear and sportswear. On top of that they make limited edition items only available for a few weeks, as they say to make them truly limited!

Mate Scandalous Micro BikiniI can’t profile everything so I”m going to pick out a few pieces that I think are awesome. Before I do that there are quite a few pairs of underwear with openings in the pouch. The first piece you see is the Scandalous Mini Bikini. You maybe asking how Mini is it? Well you haven’t seen anything. Not only does it have an opening in the pouch the back is about half the size of normal backs. Meaning it doesn’t give you full coverage. The one pictured is OH HYEON (ROYAL YELLOW ZIG-ZAG).

Mate Sexy Sporty JockJocks are alway welcome and expected in men’s underwear. Mate makes the Ultra Low Rise Sexy Sporty Jocks. Remember when I mentioned its a lower rise, this is the perfect example of that, its cut very different than underwear most of us are used too. They say this is the sexiest jock on the market and I will say it’s pretty darn sexy. Made of a leather like material. They say on the site it shows off the butt by lifting it up! This is the HYEON JOONG (BROWN LEATHER)

mate nano bikiniOne thing I really love about Korean/Japanese underwear companies is their use of colors, patterns (some not considered masculine by the western standards) and the way they put the underwear together. They are more geometric (for a lack of better word). Its different and super fun. By the way I’m not making a value judgement on the undies just saying what we in the west consider “masculine”. I think they are awesome and different. A pair that I thinks shows how different they are is the Nano Bikini. It has a solid color and mesh color panels that really accent the pouch and butt. They really thought about it and love the design. I’m only jealous I can’t wear them! One thing I forgot is the construction is different as well and I think it’s so cool how they sew it together. This is the JONG KWAN (GREEN COTTON)

Mate Mini BikiniNext up is swimwear. This pair really sums up swimwear the Mini Bikini. I have seen pictures of guys in Japan in really small swimwear and wondered if it was smaller on purpose or did they just get the wrong size. This pair shows it’s the first. The back isn’t full cut there is just a hint of cleavage in the back at the top. Some will like and others won’t! The Mini Bikini is SUPER small but super fun. I love the pouch design and the piping, its amazing and fun. This is the SEONG HYO (YELLOW)

Mate Nano Bikini swimI could go on about this line but this is the last pair we will feature will be the Nano Bikini. Similar to the one mentioned above but this one is swimwear. This pair shows what I was talking about above. The colors are not considered masculine by western standards. The pastels are not something you see in swimwear here. I think it’s super hot and different. Next is the design and it speaks to the geometric design. It’s just different but so cool! The pouch they make really accents it but doesn’t physically enhance it. I think this is an amazing pair of swim. This is the AN YEONG (WHITE)

I really love Mate. I wished I could wear the undies and swimwear but I’m way too big right now and not sure I’ll ever be down close to a 34 again. When I was younger a friend gave me one of his swim briefs he got in Japan and I loved wearing it. I out grew it and gave it to a friend to wear. You know I’m kicking myself I gave it away but I think it’s good to give it to someone who can wear it and not have it site in a drawer.

I hope you check this brand out. They do have free shipping on international orders over $55. But note this will be coming from 0ver seas and will take 6-8 business days to get to you. Go to the Mate site and check out all the designs. They have 4 pages of underwear, 3 pages of swim and I didn’t even get to the lounge or active wear sections.
