Popular Aussie underwear company 2wink Australia takes a journey back in time with its new “Walkabout” range of designer men’s underwear. For the first time ever, an Australian underwear company has teamed up with an Aboriginal artist to create a new range of 100% Australian-made men’s underwear.

The underwear range, which celebrates the Aboriginal Australian culture features footprints walking across the waistband. It was designed by Aboriginal artist Peter Mulchay of Queensland, and symbolizes the Aboriginal culture’s rite of passage for adolescent young men.

“We’re proud of our Australian history,” says 2wink Australia co-owner Carl McNeill. “And we wanted to create a range of underwear celebrating the diversity of such history while also incorporating cultural elements that are around today. We also brought on popular fitness model Lee Stram who has helped to create an incredible buzz about the Walkabout range.”

Keeping that in mind, the brand has now enlisted the help of this supportive demographic to discover the brand’s newest collection – by having them create it themselves.

The brand’s current promotional campaign, “A Chance 2Design,” will offer underwear fanatics a fun and innovative opportunity to find their inner fashionista by allowing them to design their very own pair of limited-edition underwear with a chance to win large prizes, such as a AU$200 2wink gift voucher, or even a grand prize of AU$1,500 cash.

Starting today, contestants can either manually or digitally design an entire pair of underwear and enter their original designs into the online design competition.

After the eight-week-long submissions process ends, three celebrity judges, including reality TV star Jack Mackenroth (Project Runway), award-winning comedienne Deven Green (“Welcome to My…” parody series) and Pinstripe Magazine Editor-in-Chief Marv Valladares, will enter various rounds of judging over the course of two weeks before selecting the winning design, taking into account factors like the best use of color, most creative pattern and other criteria.

Once the winning design is chosen by the team of judges, the brand expects to have 5,000 limited-edition pairs manufactured within eighteen weeks and ready to hit 2wink’s on-line store shelves shortly after. 2wink will donate 50-percent of its net sales profits of the winning design directly to fight prostate cancer. Currently, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, behind only lung cancer.  A non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than he is to develop colon, bladder, melanoma, lymphoma and kidney cancer combined. This year, in America alone, more than 32,000 men will die from the disease and more than 218,000 new cases will be diagnosed, according to Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Contest entries must be received no later than August 26, 2010. All original designs are eligible and contestants must design the entire pair. All colors are allowed and the waistband width is 4 cm. Entries must be submitted via e-mail in either .pdf or .jpg format to events@2wink.com.au.

All designs entered will become the property of 2wink Pty. Ltd., which reserves the right to manufacture any design without compensation or with notifying the entrant. The winner of the contest must be willing to sign a release form. Entries must include name, mailing address and contact details for participant.

Most of us agree that there is good and bad in everyone and I suspect that 2Wink used this same concept to come with their new dueling pair of underwear; Cool Devil and Hot Angel.  As shown in the picture above, the Cool Devil is your basic white pair of underwear but with a catching red and yellow waistband sporting the 2wink signature across the waist band with red accented trim around the legs.  The arch nemesis, Hot Angel comes in blue with a white/blue waistband and white elastic around the legs. While the manufacturer classifies these as boxers, they’re cut high around the leg and at first glance appear to be briefs.

When first slipping into this mix of cotton and spandex undies, I was instantly impressed by the texture and weight.  It’s amazing at how little 8% of spandex can go a long way in a pair to create amazing comfort and spring back benefits.  I wore these all day while running errands and cleaning up around the condo.  While they are extremely comfortable, I found them a little problematic with staying in place around the leg, which is not typical of a traditional boxer.  I like the style, weight and stretch quality of these boxers, but not a fan of those that are cut this high around the leg; a total personal preference.

If you like this cut or interested in trying something close to a brief but without sacrificing the comfort of a boxer, these might be the idea pair for you.  The final dilemma is deciding if you’re evil’s defiance or the enemy of evil!

When Tim provided me my first pair of underwear to review for UNB, I was excited and yet a little surprised when he handed me some lime green (chartreuse) 2wink briefs.  The Australian manufacturer has cleverly selected the appropriate color for spring, which caught my eye and peaked my interested.  While I’m not traditionally a fan of briefs, I wanted to give them a fair chance and see if briefs would be something I might consider again in adding to my collection.

After throwing them in the wash for an initial cleaning, I immediately threw them on and was amazed at how well these medium size undies fit and truly how you can’t deny the comfort of a 100% cotton brief.  I was initially concerned that the brief might be a little binding and restricted so I decided to take them out on test run by wearing then all day during a photography field trip.  Suffice to say,  I was extremely pleased and amazed at how well they held up throughout the day with all the bending, squatting and physical movement that the pair endured.  The second and third time I wore these pair, I chose to try them out at the gym.  Again, they consistently held up throughout my workout and didn’t even become a realization that I was even wearing briefs.  Bottom line, at the end of my rigorous testing, I wasn’t able to distinguish between these briefs and the traditional boxer briefs that I normally gravitate towards.

Some of the constructional attributes that I noticed include the following: The legs in the briefs are cut a little on the high side but are sure to accentuate a pair of muscular legs.  The white waist band is constructed and sewn well around the waist and has retained its elasticity after several washes.  In my opinion, there’s nothing worse than a cheap waistband that falls apart at the seams, stretches out and losses its supportability.  The company’s 2wink logo is embroidered continually around the waist band in dark gray lettering.  One esthetic note includes the word ‘Loaded’ printed in white just below the waist band on the left hand side of the brief along the hip, which leaves open to interpretation.

2wink Underwear has launched a new campaign for the American Market. Its a rather interesting one! Here is what they say!

2wink Australia, one of Australia’s leading men’s underwear companies, plans to rip its U.S. competition to shreds–literally!

During its new two-week promotional campaign, “Cut Up Your Old Underwear,” aimed at launching its brand in the United States by proving its quality and design to be superior to that of its competitors, 2wink Australia will be giving away up to 1,000 new pairs of its underwear lines. In order to participate, guys must submit videos or photos of themselves cutting up or destroying an old pair of brand name underwear that they own – and in exchange will receive a free pair of 2wink underwear. It’s that simple.

Founded in 2005 by Carl McNeill, 2wink is the only underwear company producing its apparel in Perth, Western Australia, after making the strategic decision to move it from China. The brand, which is available to over 30 countries, has created four new designs within the last quarter, including two of its most popular styles, Cool Devil and Hot Angel. It is also known for its briefs and boxer designs of Loaded Gen2, which includes an inside secret pouch to hide a condom. The brand was created out of McNeill’s frustration of “buying underwear that didn’t last long and was expensive.” The company has since gone on to manufacture 80,000 pairs of underwear per annum and plans to expand into swimwear soon.

The “Cut Up Your Old Underwear” campaign will launch on March 15. Entries must be received no later than two weeks from the start of the campaign. All brand labels are eligible. Limit is 1,000 pairs of underwear. Entries must be sent via video or jpeg format by e-mail to events@2wink.com.au, and agree to 2wink Pty. Ltd. using for marketing purposes. Entries must include preferred underwear size, mailing address and contact details for participant.
